What is your specialty? It seems like you do everything.
I do cover a lot of things. That's true. My specialty is that I'm a
'businessman' techie. I know business and can better match technology to
business needs than most technicians.
As a technician, I am a generalist and hands-on. I believe that serves my
clients well. I can handle most of their needs and will find them the right
technical expert when one is required. And this occurs much less often than
you might expect.
Do you do work for individuals?
Absolutely. Unlike many of my competitors, I'm happy to work with ordinary
people, in their homes, helping them get the most out of their computers and
networks.
Do you work on Macs (Linux, Unix...)?
No. The day may come when a really good client wants me to support them in
a move into another technology and I'll invest in the learning required, but
presently I help my clients find the skills they need with another consultant.
Do you charge for travel time?
What if I'm not happy with your service or bill?
Tell me! I'm committed to customer delight. My work is guaranteed. I'll
make it right.
What about backup, you are a one person business?
If I'm not available, due to illness or vacation for example, call one of
my many competitors. I'll even give you names and numbers in advance and make
coverage arrangements if appropriate. I don't worry that you'll like a
competitor better.
I had written this site using first person plural ('we' and 'us'). It
seemed appropriate. But the fact is I've no intention of ever hiring an
employee or using a subcontractor for general work.
Do you develop programs to meet my particular business needs?
I've done tons of programming in a whole host of languages. I can still do
it, but I don't. I find I can meet most client needs with a tool like
Microsoft Access. I believe my
clients are better served in this way.
But, I'm beginning to work up a dynamic web site. I'm using Perl and MySQL,
which means I'm programming. "Never say never", I'm told.
Are you available for an extended assignment or full-time job?
I'll explore any promising opportunity, but I'm not looking for contract or
'at will' employment that would make me unavailable to my current clients.
